Hot Stone Massage is another modified Swedish Massage.  In this technique, the therapist uses basalt stones heated to between 120° and 130°F and places them in strategic areas of the body.  The heat of the stones sinks into the muscle, easing tension and allowing the massage therapist to work more deeply.  This massage is especially popular during the cold, rainy Portland winters, especially since the heat from the stones prolongs that warm, relaxed feeling long after the massage has ended.  Hot Stone Massage is not good for expecting mothers, because pregnancy produces the hormone elastin to loosen the mother’s joints during labor.  The level of relaxation from the heat of the stones combined with the elastin can overstretch the joints, causing them to remain excessively loose after the birth.  As with all massage, it is extremely important to drink plenty of water after the session to flush all the metabolic waste from your body.

A trigger point is a spot on your muscle that is extremely tender and causes pain in other areas when pushed.  Trigger Point Therapy is a technique designed to decompress these spots loosening and relaxing the muscle.  The massage therapist will use little to no lotion and will use pressure from the fingers, knuckles or elbows to locate trigger points.  Once found, the massage therapist will hold pressure on the trigger point for 10 – 30 seconds.  Trigger point therapy is often used within a Swedish or Deep Tissue Massage.  This technique can feel painful in the moment, but the pain tends to fade as the trigger point loosens.  For excessively tender or chronically tense muscle groups, your massage therapist can show you self-care techniques that use household items to perform Trigger Point Therapy on yourself between massage sessions.  As with all massage, it is extremely important to drink plenty of water after the session to flush all the metabolic waste from your body.

This is a relaxing massage, designed to help you shed the worries of the day.  The most basic massage in the world, the Swedish Massage is designed to slow the heart rate and relax the body, while increasing blood and lymph circulation.  This increases the level of oxygen in your muscles and brain, and helps your immune system stay strong.  This is the best massage to receive if you’ve never had a massage before.  It’s a simple, no-hassle massage that has become a classic the world over.  Consisting of a combination of broad strokes, muscle kneading and short, light chopping motions, this massage will help you kick back and forget your worries.  As with all massage, it is extremely important to drink plenty of water after the session to flush all the metabolic waste from your body.

You can get a referral from your medical doctor or chiropractor. If you don’t have a chiropractor, we can recommend a variety of chiropractors for you to choose from.

Life can be confusing and painful after a car accident. Trying to figure out how to deal with insurance and what to do with your car is extremely stressful. Top that off with pain from injuries, and you’ve got the recipe for a serious life crisis!

Medical and chiropractic treatments are both important for regaining your health after an accident, but don’t count massage out. You’d be amazed at just how good you’ll feel when you receive massage therapy as part of your accident recovery.

Here are the top five reasons why you should include massage in your treatment plan:

1. Help prevent the formation of scar tissue.

2. Increase your range of motion, which may have decreased due to your injuries.

3. Reduce your pain and swelling.

4. Improve your blood and lymph circulation.

5. Reduce your physical and emotional stress.

These are only a few of the many benefits of massage! If you or someone you know has suffered from a motor vehicle accident and would  like to include massage in their recovery process, please contact SK Massage Therapy, LLC to set up an appointment.  Let us do the work! After we receive a referral from your doctor, we can check with your insurance company to make sure that your massage sessions are covered, and our billing department will file the claims to make your life easier. We can work alongside your existing health care team to make sure that you are doing everything  possible to work towards wellness!
